May 27, 2015
On May 14, 2015, Linda Davis met with City of London staff, Donna Baxter, Manager, Policy and Planning Support and Paul D’Hollander, Manager East Area Recreation Services. Donna and Paul reviewed the process that had brought us to the current project and noted that nine other properties were considered, including Churchill Public School, before deciding on East Lion’s Park.
Paul discussed the project status while Donna gave an overview of the timelines going forward. This summer they will develop community partnerships and establish a short list of architects. The project will create a 45,000 sq. ft. 2 story building which will likely be located on the SE corner of the property with an adjacent parking lot on the NE corner.
The proposed site will take about 1/3 of the park leaving an area big enough for the current soccer field and some baseball diamonds. The building will be two levels with the double gym and indoor pool. The second level will have space for meeting rooms. Community partners, with capital to invest, will be sought and space will be allocated for those partners.
The City will engage the community partners by September 2015 and members of the community and the public by the end of 2015. In 2016 the builder will be chosen and ground should be broken by the Fall of 2016 with completion in 2018. These time lines are preliminary and are subject to change but the ground breaking by late Summer or early Fall of 2016 is the target.
Both Donna and Paul assured me that they were looking forward to the public engagement and are anxious to have this facility blend into the, already well established community.
Community funds were raised for this project prior to the formation of the Argyle Community Association (ACA) and are now held in trust for equipment. Once the building is underway Paul can contact the fund organizers to select and order the equipment that committee was authorized to purchase.
So the next step for us will be the public engagement. My committee will send out information to the Argyle area and our membership to get as many participants as possible to attend the meetings.
